So how was it today?

It was great.

I didn't drive - hand still too sore. Martin drove the R33.

As a new driver, he had to do a 3 lap session before the real event started to get a base time. He went out with about 8 other new drivers, and in the traffic could only do a 1:34. They put all the new drivers in a separate group (group 6), and he was P1 on the grid. For the first round they wanted all new drivers to start one at a time, rather than in pairs. He drove away from the rest of the group, and lapped someone within the 5 laps. They moved him to group 4, P2 on the grid for the 2nd session. He was paired with a 270RWKW R32, and they went side by side to turn 1, then he let the other guy have the lead. I couldn't see from turn 2 to the kink, but each time they reached the kink the R32 was about 200m in front. By the time they came through the northern hairpin Martin was up his rear again. This continued for the whole 2nd & 3rd session. In the 4th session he managed to get to turn 1 first, and drove away from the R32 for the next 5 laps. Fastest lap was 1:25.9 in the last session. We left the track around 4:30.

The day was well organised, well attended, and ran like clockwork. The car performed faultlessly. I can't wait for round 2 to get on the track.

Their next event is the 6hr relay on the 4th May - the same event someone was trying to get a team organised for last year. I don't know much about the format and the supp regs aren't out yet, but we'd be keen to drive if anyone else is interested.

Sounds like an awesome event, my mate was one of the other newbies in his Alfa Sud, definitely keen to get out to some this year, will probably miss round two (new engine should be going in then), but will hopefully make the last three.

For the 6 hours relay you have teams of 3-4 cars and you each nominate a time you can consistantly hit, each driver has to do at least 20% of the time, if you go faster than your nominated time you get 0 points, if you get within 1 second you get 2 points and if you're more than 1 second slower you get 0 points.

The annual MSCA 6 Hour Regularity Relay is on the 4th May, and the supp regs are available at

A couple of things to note about this event:

1. You don't have to join MSCA to compete, as it is a multi-club event. You do need an L2S Cams licence (which many of us already have) and have to be a member of a Cams affiliated club (which we all are). This only applies to the 6 hour - "normal" supersprint events require MSCA membership at $20 per year.

2. Teams are comprised of 4 - 6 drivers, and a minimum of 3 & max of 6 cars. Entry fee is $120 per driver (waiting on clarification of this - I thought it would be a fixed price per team)

3. A dorian timer is compulsory, but they are available for hire on the day at a cost of $30, plus a $70 deposit (ie pay $100, get $70 back when you return it). The timers give lap timing to 4 decimal places - ie 1:25.8978, so are very accurate. No Harry's Lap Timer app required. Anyone planning to compete in the "normal" supersprint events would probably want to buy a dorian, as they are required after your first event (not including the 6 hour). Note that a Dorian timer can be shared between drivers at different events, but can only be used by one driver at each event - ie you can borrow a timer from someone else, if they are not competing at that round. The club could also purchase 1 or 2 to rent to members (hint).

4. For this event, you must be doing lap times between 1:18 & 1:40, any faster or slower than this you can't compete. This doesn't apply for "normal" supersprint events, just for the 6 hour. Each driver needs to nominate a lap time, and winning involves getting as close to that time as consistently as possible.

5. You will get plenty of track time - even with 6 drivers you will average 1 hour on the track - around 40 laps.

5. Entries close on Wed 23rd of April. We would enter if there were a few others willing to compete, but we need to get it happening. We need another 2 - 4 drivers, with 2 - 4 cars to form a team.

Oh how i wish i had a the GT4 running

So... regularity... is consistency the only measure of performance (ie, who wins, and looses)?
Or does faster lap time (or faster nominated lap time) still play some role?

For example, if i take my RAV4 out there (lol!), nominate 1:40, and hit 1:40 on every lap all day, do i win?

It's a bit more than that it seems - the supp regs explain (well, try to explain) how the system works for the 6 hr. If your team all hit their nominated times all day, regardless if it was 1:18 or 1:40, then you would probably win.

Basically each driver nominates a lap time. The officials then work out that teams theoretical total number off laps for the 6 hours - their "target" laps. Each team needs to get as close to their target laps as possible, and gets bonus laps for drivers doing laps within 1 second of their nominated times. There are also penalty laps for going faster than the nominated times. The team with the highest percentage of their target achieved wins.

Read clause 37 of the supp regs for the full details - my head is still spinning trying to fully understand it.
