Exhaust Sound and Size - TA22

Postby 1972_flatlight » Thu Jun 12, 2014 9:55 pm

Hi Guys and Gals..

Last time i had a TA22 on the road was about 20 years ago and so seeking advice..

Will be needing a custom exhaust system to be fitted after the engine is built and so as the members of the site have probably heard the tones and discussed what each other has - my questions are:

What size can i get mandril bent exhaust system - 2.5" ..? Bigger..?

Whats the best Resonator and Muffler that most have found appealing..? and of course brand..?

OR

Are they all much the same..?

Cheers the input..

Andy :-)

I stick to Magnaflow mufflers. I have heard magnaflows on several different cars and all have sounded great and are made well.

As damian said hotdog in the middle with a muffler at the rear works well. 2.25" to 2.5 is the go

What are peoples thoughts on the varex electronic muffler that allows you to open and close the muffler?

2.5 does fit but there is not much room over the diff especially if the car is lowered

Hi Everyone..

My build nears its completion; at long last.. :-)

Does anyone know where I can purchase 4 to 1 extractors that end in 2.5 inches .. ?

The largest ive seen are the Hurricans (ebay) that end with 2 inches..

Though there are several 2.5" from the US for the 3TC engine but are for Corollas.. None of the Manufacturers are able to give me specs to see whether they will clear the Idler Arm..

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated -- cheers..

what engine are you running again and how much crazies (horse-whisperers) will you expect from it?

If its std-mild setup, go 2-1\4in, otherwise go 2-1\2in. I just recently fitted a 2-1\2 and it bend over the diff no probs. Its got a resonator with a straight through muffler and it sounds just nice/right.

Hi HKS7MGT,

Ive got the 2TG with 3T crank; bored to 89mm - ported and polished with cams..

Followed the same recipe, so to speak as my Brothers car (though he went one step up on the inlet cam profile than what I got ground).

He gets 230 HP at the wheels..

Im thinking I should be expecting about 200HP - as i limited myself to the 36mm chokes within a pair of 40 DCOE webers (he runs the 40mm with the 45's) and hence my max HP is limited too 6000 rpm (there abouts)

Out of interest .. if any members read this thread... what HP do the guys in the Celica club get out of their beasts ..? (know their was a dyno day this year and so interested if my brothers mild tune (rally specs) is ok with whats out there..??)

Cheers Andy..

yeah i'd definitely go with a 2-1\2in zorst system with a resonator and straight through muffler.

Power wise, if your getting 200HP at the wheels, that will be one mean hybrid engine hehe. You'll have to take me for a ride one day. On the street, you'll love it, and on the track you'll be smiling from ear to ear. I'm looking for an excuse to go to mallala again so if you're going out there, give me a heads up.

I'm making about 150hp at the flywheel (it dyno'd at 80rwkw at 6500RPM, but i had to rev limit it to 7400ish) and that is with a stock 2TG engine internals, but with modified inlet and zorst system (i was lucky that i had a 4-1 zorst that collected together at 2-1\2in). If i was you, i'd get a set of headers made and that way they can custom make it to suit your porting too. Plenty of shops used to do this around Adelaide. I'm happy with mine at the moment considering its a stocker on the inside. It pulls hard enough for an old car. Once i build a hybrid engine though, i'd like to see what you guys are getting, 200-250, but i may later change my mind as a 250HP T series engine is no-longer really street-able.

keep us posted

I spoke with the guys that make Hurricane extractors this morning and they said I could get them made with whatever size tubing I wished - just need to weld them up myself -- thats probably the way Ill go.. :-)
Yes, the more radical you go with your cams and choke sizes the less streetable the engine; though my cams are quite mild at present and so this will def b a restriction on how many HP ill get -- fingers crossed I make the 200 club but if not im cool with that..
Will be nice to drive a car with a carby roar.. I miss that..
My car will be completed in the next few months.. Will then be joining the club and coming out to some events..
Shall post some pics of the yellow lady when I get time.. Cheers Andy..
