RA60 diff help.

Postby th13lz » Thu Dec 18, 2014 6:34 pm

Hi all. I'm looking to weld the diff in the ra60 track car, but I can't get the diff case out. Also unsure on how to get the axles out. I've pulled the outter drums off, and undone the 4 bolts that seem to hold the brakes on place. Have also removed all nuts from around the diff case and it comes mostly off, but gets stuck halfway.

The axles can get a bit stuck. Grab the brake drum and put it on backwards on the axle so the inside of the drum is facing you. Put the wheel nuts on but only put them on a few or more threads each. You can now pull the brake drum towards you with a bit of force so you are using it as a slide hammer which will jar the axles out

Awesome, thanks. I'll try that tomorrow night after work.

Just though I'd update. The drums for a sliding hammer worked really well, however they were quite stuck on. Ive got blisters on my fingers from yanking the drums lol. After they came out it was all pretty easy to do. Thanks for the help.

Pre heat the spider gears before you weld them gives you better penetration of the weld

Cheers. The diff has already been welded though.

On another note, I've heard of another idea that drag racers do, similar to welding. But instead of welding the gears, they pour molten aluminum in it to fill it completely. Then the gears also don't get heat stressed. Has anyone heard of this happening? I would be tempted to look into it if I experience issues with my welded diff, but enjoyed the feeling of it.

heard of it, but haven't known anyone who has done it.

makes sense in theory, but also makes it a bit heavier which may have a drawback?
