Windscreen Mounted Digi Camera's

Postby HKS7MGT » Mon Mar 02, 2015 10:19 am

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at buying a digital camera to replace the one that fell off at last years track day. There are heaps out on the market, but i thought i'd gauge your experience on what you guys are using.

The only prerequisites are that it can record in a file format that's easily modifiable and that it's small and light enough to be mounted to motorcycle fairing.

thanks in advance

Hmmm.

How much do you want to spend?
Obviously there are the GoPro's and Sony ActionCams, but they are pretty spendy (unless you get an old GoPro).

Forget about buying any the cheaper alternatives locally (ie, the ones that Jaycar, JBHiFi sell).
You can get those for 1/2 the price online (DX, ebay, etc).

Maybe have a look here?

There are some decent quality cams on there cheap, but you have to do your homework (read the reviews, find un-edited example footage on youtube, etc).

My in car cam works really well, but it's made for a different use. It only has a tiny battery (~10mins worth) and isnt water/dust/shock proof.
Great for in-car, but not much else.
Video quality out of it is amazing though (see my youtube vids from ozgym. 1080p fullscreen. youtube does drop the quality a bit).
It's one of these: http://www.dx.com/p/g50-full-hd-1080p-5 ... ver-323001

Contour roam3 might be worth considering. The price is up there, but as far as the gopros and contour roams go its a competitive price. There is a story behind why the contour roam3 is what it is and it largely revolves around contour being a very small company and getting smashed for 6 by gopro in terms of marketing. So even though contour won the contract with the US army etc it did not help them be successful.
I got a contour roam v 1 for a present a long time ago and it still works a treat. tought thing too, i've taken it swiming in the sea without its waterproof housing but for deeper snorkeling etc i chuck it in its housing.

Mounting the cameras can be an issue, but look up polymer clay on youtube.
